Yokogawa’s ProSafe-RS system secures ISASecure CSA Level 1 certification

ProSafe-RS

Yokogawa Electric secured ISASecure CSA Level 1 certification from the ISA Security Compliance Institute (ISCI) for its ProSafe-RS safety instrumented product in the OpreX Control and Safety System line. The approval is the first for a safety instrumented system, emphasizing Yokogawa’s focus on cybersecurity to provide users with enhanced confidence in the use of this product.

The ISASecure CSA Level 1 certification certifies that the ProSafe-RS instrumented systems have been recognized by third parties as having security controls that conform to the international standards. Yokogawa’s ProSafe-RS safety instrumented system is certified for use in safety integrity level 3 (SIL3) applications, according to a company statement

Deployed in over 2,400 projects, ranging from large-scale integrated process automation projects to stand-alone solutions, the ProSafe-RS line complies with IEC61508 and ANSI/ISA 84 safety systems and is built with competence, lifecycle support and long term sustainability.

The IEC (International Electrochemical Commission) is a global, not-for-profit membership organization that works towards facilitating technical innovation, affordable infrastructure development, efficient and sustainable energy access, smart urbanization and transportation systems, climate change mitigation, and increases the safety of people and the environment.

The IEC publishes around 10,000 IEC international standards that together with conformity assessment provide the technical framework, which allows governments to build national quality infrastructure and companies of all sizes to buy and sell consistently safe and reliable products in most countries.

Developed by the ISCI, the ISASecure CSA certification program focuses on the security of embedded devices and related components, such as software applications, host devices, and network devices. ISCI members come mainly from the International Society of Automation, and the principal activity of the organization is the promotion of security certification for industrial control systems and control devices.

The ISASecure CSA certification program was launched in August 2019, replacing the ISASecure EDSA certification program. It complies with the International Electrotechnical Commission’s IEC 62443-4-2 and IEC 62443-4-1 international standards for security in control devices.

The ProSafe-RS system has held ISASecure EDSA certification since 2013. Replacing the certification program, ISASecure CSA certified compliance with the IEC 62443-4-2 and IEC 62443-4-1 international standards pertaining to control device security. The Tokyo-headquartered company also plans to obtain ISASecure CSA certification for the ProSafe-RS Lite SIL2 safety instrumented system, which was released in January this year.

Receipt of this certification indicates that a product has been recognized by a third party as having security controls that conform to these international standards. The IEC 62443-4-1 covers security for industrial automation and control systems focusing on secure product development lifecycle requirements, while the IEC 62443-4-2 standard provides security for industrial automation and control systems dealing with technical security requirements for industrial automation control system (IACS) components.

Through the development of highly secure control devices and systems, as well as the provision of support services, Yokogawa provides a range of security solutions. Yokogawa will leverage the latest certification to accelerate its efforts to enhance the cybersecurity of its customers’ plant operations.

Last year, Yokogawa announced that its control system development process has obtained ISASecure SDLA (Security Development Lifecycle Assurance) version 2.0.0 certification from the ISCI, which guarantees that the development lifecycle processes of the suppliers for control system products meet the security requirements. Such certification helped to ensure compliance for IACS based on the ISA/IEC 62443-4-1 standard.
